High Mortality Rates in Large Urban Areas

ONS Figures Reveal High Mortality Rates in Large Urban Areas

New figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveal that mortality rates are significantly higher in large urban areas and among the most deprived communities in England. The data highlights stark health inequalities, with the findings varying across different ethnic groups.

The latest statistics show that major built-up areas (BUAs) recorded the highest age-standardised mortality rates (ASMRs) for most ethnic groups, except for the Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Black African, Black Other, Arab, and Any Other Ethnic Group. These groups experienced higher ASMRs in smaller and medium-sized built-up areas.

In contrast, small and minor BUAs recorded the lowest ASMR for poor self-reported health, while London had the lowest rate among disabled individuals. Between March 2021 and May 2023, mortality rates in London were lower compared to other large BUAs.

Interestingly, within the small and minor BUAs, the Bangladeshi ethnic group had the highest ASMR, while the Chinese ethnic group had the lowest. In major BUAs, the White British ethnic group had the highest ASMR, while the Black African ethnic group had the lowest. Overall, the White British ethnic group consistently ranked among those with the highest ASMRs in major cities, London, and other urban areas.

Commenting on the findings, Veena Raleigh, Senior Fellow at The King’s Fund, said: “Today’s findings add to the growing evidence of entrenched health inequalities in England’s unequal society, and the adverse and widespread impact of deprivation on health. Reducing health inequalities, and the socio-economic inequalities that drive them, must be an urgent priority for the new government.”

A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) added: “Lord Darzi’s report revealed the appalling state of the NHS. This Government is taking immediate action to get it back on its feet and will create a 10-Year Plan to make it fit for the future.

“We will fundamentally reform the health system through three big shifts – from hospital to the community, analogue to digital, and treatment to prevention. We will create a healthier society while ensuring patients receive the highest quality care when and where they need it.”**

This report underscores the pressing need for targeted interventions to address the widening health disparities across urban areas, particularly those facing high deprivation levels.
