The North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board (ICB) has launched a transformative 12-point plan aimed at improving the health of people in the region. The Clinical Conditions Strategic Plan focuses on 12 health conditions that have the most significant impact on the population and calls on the NHS to take more action to prevent ill health.
Dr Neil O’Brien, chief medical officer at North East and North Cumbria ICB, highlighted the region’s health challenges, stating: “For too long, people in our region have lived with worse health than the rest of England. We have shorter lives, more long-term conditions, and higher rates of heart disease and lung cancer. One in five of us suffers from anxiety or depression.”
Dr O’Brien emphasised the need for change, noting that a detailed analysis of health data clearly shows which conditions are most affecting people. The plan will focus efforts where they can make the most difference.
The plan outlines several top priorities for adults, including cardiovascular and respiratory health, lung cancer, lower back pain, and mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression.
For children, the focus will be on managing conditions like diabetes, asthma, epilepsy, obesity, oral health, autism, and learning disabilities. Mental health, particularly anxiety and other issues affecting young people, is also a major concern.
To combat high rates of childhood obesity, the plan introduces new services, including dietary support and psychological care. Additionally, mental health support teams in schools will be expanded, and regular health checks will be provided for young people with autism or learning disabilities.
Dr O’Brien stressed the importance of not only treating illness but also preventing it, stating: “We have fantastic health services, but that’s not enough. We can do more to prevent illness and help people stay well. That means offering help to stop smoking and providing more checks to catch cancers earlier.”
Recognising that health is influenced by broader social factors such as housing, poverty, and crime, the ICB plans to work closely with councils and other services to address these issues where possible, creating a more holistic approach to healthcare.
This ambitious 12-point plan aims to make significant strides in improving health outcomes for the people of North East and North Cumbria by targeting the conditions that matter most and working to prevent illness before it starts.
