“Partnering boosted fuel sales at targeted sites — and helped support frontline staff.”

In a major leap forward for cardiovascular diagnostics, the NHS has rolled out advanced 3D heart scan technology—known as HeartFlow Analysis—across 56 hospitals in England. This state-of-the-art tool is revolutionising the way coronary heart disease is diagnosed and treated, offering a safer, faster, and more cost-effective alternative to traditional methods.
At the heart of this innovation lies computed tomography coronary angiography (CTCA), combined with sophisticated AI algorithms. HeartFlow Analysis uses standard CT scans to produce a detailed 3D model of a patient’s coronary arteries. The software then simulates blood flow through these vessels, identifying blockages and narrowing that might restrict oxygen supply to the heart.
What makes this so significant is its non-invasive nature. Traditionally, many patients suspected of having coronary artery disease are referred for an invasive coronary angiogram—an uncomfortable and resource-intensive procedure involving the insertion of a catheter through the groin or wrist. HeartFlow enables clinicians to make informed treatment decisions without the need to go inside the body, sparing patients the risks and recovery time associated with surgery.
A recent study published in Nature Medicine has confirmed the real-world value of HeartFlow. The analysis found that the adoption of the technology has led to savings of nearly £10 million for the NHS, mainly through reducing unnecessary tests and procedures. Patients who underwent HeartFlow scans were significantly less likely to be referred for further invasive testing, and treatment decisions were reached more quickly and accurately.
Professor Nick Curzen, a consultant cardiologist involved in the study, praised the system’s potential:
“This technology gives clinicians a far clearer picture of which patients truly need intervention. It’s better for the patient, and it’s better for the system.”
Beyond financial benefits, HeartFlow has been associated with improved patient outcomes. Faster diagnosis means quicker access to life-saving interventions for those who need them, while those who don’t can avoid the stress and complications of unnecessary procedures.
For many patients, this translates into reduced anxiety, shorter waiting times, and greater confidence in their treatment plan. For clinicians, it offers a robust diagnostic tool that enhances decision-making and streamlines workflows.
The adoption of HeartFlow across England marks a turning point in cardiac diagnostics, but the NHS isn’t stopping there. With a growing focus on digital health and precision medicine, further investment is expected in technologies that harness artificial intelligence and advanced imaging to personalise care.
HeartFlow’s success also opens doors to broader applications of 3D imaging in other areas of medicine, potentially transforming the way we diagnose diseases from stroke to cancer.
As the NHS continues to modernise, innovations like HeartFlow Analysis not only improve clinical accuracy and efficiency but also underscore the importance of technology in building a sustainable, patient-centred healthcare system.
